I have heard the tax-hungry Iowa legislators are seeking to abolish the Forest Reserve Program. I know the argument. Land owners with timber in the program are not paying their fair share. Does Iowa have abundant forest land? Too many trees? Big Business receives tax exemptions all the time. Big agribusiness is loaded with federal aid programs. Taking away the Forest Reserve Program will not be a windfall for local counties. Encouraging timbered land in a state that has very little is a good thing for the environment and for all Iowa residents.
