COLUMBUS JUNCTION — Through 84 innings pitched this summer, Pekin sophomore hurler Mackenzie Laux has given up just 23 hits.
On Tuesday, Laux threw yet another no-hitter against Wapello.
The no-hitter, which allowed the eighth-ranked Panthers a 6-0 victory, is Laux’s fourth this season. Laux also posted a no-no against WACO Monday and threw a perfect game against Louisa-Muscatine last Thursday.
Pekin also got in some night-time softball action versus Columbus Junction on Tuesday. Laux tossed a two-hitter in the Panthers’ 10-0 win and fanned 14.
Pekin’s game versus Wapello started on Monday in Pekin. The two teams played just over four innings before the game was halted because of rain. The two teams completed the contest Tuesday afternoon at Wapello. Then Pekin traveled 11 miles up the road to Columbus Junction to finish off the evening.
“It was a busy day. We wanted to go in and win two conference games and stay on top and that’s what we did,” said Pekin head coach Bryan Marlay.
Laux (12-1) was unflappable against Wapello as she threw seven scoreless innings while fanning seven Wapello batters. The four no-hitters and the perfect game leaves Laux with the best earned run average in all of Class 2A according to www.quikstatsiowa.com. Laux’s ERA is currently 0.33. She’s given up just four earned runs all season.
“Mackenzie has done a lot of work to get herself in this position. She’s put in hours and hours of hard work. It’s nice to see her get rewards,” said Marlay.
Mycaela Crouse doubled twice versus Columbus Junction and Shelby Blakely was 2-2 at the dish.
Pekin advances to 17-3 overall and a perfect 11-0 in Southeast Iowa SuperConference play. The Panthers play at Mediapolis on Thursday.
