EDDYVILLE — Tuesday’s Rocket Relays turned into a two-team race between Eddyville-Blakesburg and Pekin. The Rockets used their home track advantage to edge the Panthers by four points.

Eddyville-Blakesburg claimed first in the Class A results with a total of 147 points, topping Pekin’s 143 points. Van Buren finished fourth with 69 points.

In the Class B results, HLV beat the eight-team field with 120 points. Cardinal and North Mahaska tied for third with 67 points. Tri-County came in fifth place with 62 points.

The Rockets’ Jacob Batterson finished seventh in the state last year in the 110 hurdles as a freshman. This season, he is eyeing an even higher finish. Batterson won the 110 hurdles on Tuesday with a time of 14.10 to help E-B to the team title.

The Rockets’ long distance runners also had a big impact on the final standings. Zach Baker won the 3,200 meter run with a time of 10:12.30, his time was almost a minute better than Pekin’s Jacob Cooley, who finished second. In the 1,600 meter run, Baker took second place with a time of 4:43.80.

The other first place finishes for E-B came in the long jump and the 4x400. Ben Taylor jumped 20-03 to win the long jump for the Rockets. E-B’s time of 3:42.5 was good enough to win the event.

A trio of Pekin Panthers stood out in the field events Tuesday. Tyler Crouse won both the discuss and the shot put, while teammate Jason Schultz finished in both events. Crouse on the shot put with a toss of 46-02 and the discus with a throw of 144-05.

Jordan Sathoff finished the Panthers impressive day in the field events with a win in the high jump. Sathoff claimed first with a leap of 6-06.

In the 400 hurdles, Brad Mosinski claimed top honors with a time of 55.70.

The Panthers also did well in the relay events. In the shuttle hurdle relay, Pekin’s team of Mosinski, Hunter Maeder, Kaleb Watson and Kelly Graham ran a time of 1:02.9 to win the event.

The Panthers also won the distance medley and the 4x100. The Panthers’ team of Kelly Graham, Bryce Millikin, Mosinski and Watson won the event with a time of 45.70.

“Even though we got beat by four points, I was pleased with the effort our team made tonight,” Pekin coach Davis Eidahl said. “We had new runners step up and score points for us and that is what makes it exciting.”

Van Buren’s Brock Caves took first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.10.

In the Class B results, Cardinal’s Richard Fortney secured a number of points for the Comets. Fortney won the shot put with a toss of 43-05 and finished third in the discus.

A.J. Rachford followed Fortney with a win of his own in the high jump for Cardinal. The Comets’ Kyle LaPoint also had a first place finish, his coming in the 800 with a time of 2:08.10.

Tri-County’s Ryan Schmidt scored a pair of victories for the Trojans on Tuesday. First, Schmidt won the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.50. In the 400 hurdles, Schmidt ran a time of 58.20 to take first place.

Tri-County also did well in the relay events, winning the 4x100 and the 4x200. The Trojans ran a time of 46.24 to win the 4x100.

North Mahaska’s Jake Davis won the long jump for the Warhawks with a leap of 18-05.

Pekin runner-up at Van Buren Relays

KEOSAUQUA — The Pekin girls track team competed to a high finish at the Van Buren Relays in Keosauqua on Monday.

Cardinal’s Sarah Yeager stole the show.

The Comet junior won three events — 100 dash (12.55), 100 hurdles (14.84) and the 400 hurdles (1:08.9) — and helped her team to a sixth-place finish.

Yeager will run in the 100 dash and 100 hurdles at the prestigious Drake Relays this week.

Pekin also won its fair share of events and tallied 113 points for the runner-up slot in the 15-team meet. Iowa City Regina just edged out the Panthers for first place with 118 points.

Jennifer Clubb took first in the discus for Pekin with a throw of 123-8 and the Panthers won four relay events — the 4x800, shuttle hurdle relay, 4x200 and 4x400.

Davis County also displayed some fine performances on the evening. The Mustangs notched 66 points for fourth place.

Felicia Shunk won the high jump (5-1) and Madison Henderson took first in the discus (36-4) for the Mustangs. It didn’t stop there for head coach Josh Husted’s squad as Amanda Wakelin crossed the finish line first in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.65.

“We improved our times a lot, especially in 400, half mile, 1,500, sprint medley and the 4x400,” said Husted. “We are either running close to state qualifying or state times in those events.”

Van Buren finished in ninth place and won the long jump. Fairfield Maharishi placed 10th.

Van Buren runner-up at Hawk Relays

DONNELLSON — The Van Buren and Cardinal boys track squads competed at the Hawk Relays in Donnellson on Monday.

Van Buren finished runner-up at the meet with 125 points, tied with Mediapolis in Class A. Central Lee took first place with 132 points.

Cardinal finished third in Class B with 93.5 points.

The Warriors won the 4x800 and the 4x400 relays.

Van Buren’s Dennis Halverson was second in the long jump with a leap of 19-11.5. The Warriors were also runner-up in the 4x200, distance medley and the 4x100 relay.

Cardinal’s Richard Fortney won the discus with a toss of 128.75. Michael Goering was also a winner on this night as he placed first in the 400 hurdles (1:05.4).

Cardinal won the distance medley in a time of 4:08.6 with the squad of Michael Warren, Mitch Bloomquist, Jake Scherer and Kyle LaPoint.

Tri-County boys and girls track teams finish fourth

BELLE PLAINE — Both the Tri-County boys and girls track teams took fourth at the Belle Plaine Invite on Monday.

The girls tied Lone Tree for fourth with 74 points. The boys had 55 points in the invite.

In the girls competition, Jamie Vermillion stood out for the Trojans in the discuss. Vermillion nearly topped the 100 foot mark with a toss of 98-10. Tina Fry’s toss of 89-7 gave Tri-County a one-two finish in the event.

The Trojans relay teams also did well. In the 4x200, Katie Krumm, Melanie Anderson, Brittany Kirkpatrick and Sami Kirkpatrick ran a time of 2:06.24 to finish second.

Tri-County also claimed second place in the 1,600 sprint medley with a time of 2:07.79. Krumm, Shellbi Burdock, Anderson and Sami Kirkpatrick ran in the event.

The last second place finish for the Trojans came in the shuttle hurdle relay. The time of 1:18.94 was run by Krumm, Anderson, Brittany Kirkpatrick and Sami Kirkpatrick.

In boys action, Ryan Schmidt took first in the 400 hurdles after he clocked a 59.62. Colt Brumbaugh claimed second place in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.68.

The Trojans had two first place finishes in the relay events. In the 4x100, Michael Armstrong, Andy Thomas, Brumbaugh and Schmidt ran a time of 46.70.

The same four Tri-County runners also claimed first place in the 4x200 with a time of 1:39.71.
