MOULTON — The Moulton-Udell girls basketball team won its season opener over Davis County on Monday night by a score of 54-47.

The Eagles took a 23-16 lead into halftime but a slow third quarter threatened their lead.

“We jumped out real early, then we started coasting,” said M-U head coach Brent Martsching, “In the third, we didn’t play with much energy.”

The Mustangs (0-1) were able to take a 36-34 lead before the fourth quarter after scoring 20 points in the third quarter. Led by junior Kaitlin Fipps’ 18 points and Krista Gibson’s nine points, the Mustangs were primed to win the game.

That was until the Eagles offense clicked off of cruise control and stepped on the scoring pedal.

Led by Alexis Kauzlarich’s 15 points and Kaylee Stansberry’s 13 points, M-U (1-0) was able to muster their own 20-point quarter and sealed the victory.

“We finally got going again in fourth quarter,” said coach Martsching. “It was a good way to start the season. Our kids played with a lot of energy to get this win.”

M-U gets back in action next Tuesday, Dec. 1 when the squad travels to Seymour. The Mustangs will be at it again tonight at Fort Madison.
