Richard England threw a one-hit shutout in the Centerville baseball team’s 4-0 victory over Fort Madison in the top half of a home doubleheader Friday in non-conference action.

“England threw very well again,” Centerville head coach Bill Huisman said. “He’s been doing that all year for us.”

England fanned six batters in his six innings of work on the mound.

Unfortunately for the Big Reds, they were unable to complete the sweep, falling to Fort Madison 7-6 in the nightcap.

In the first game, Centerville scored three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Big Reds tacked another run on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

Centerville’s Zach Lockman went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI.

The Bloodhounds jumped out to an early lead in game two by scoring five runs in the top of the first in what would turn out to be a back-and-forth contest.

Centerville’s Jose Marin started the game on the mound for the Big Reds. Huisman said Marin had struggled with arm problems earlier in the season and he was trying to work him back into the pitching rotation. After a rough start, Marin settled down and pitched well, the coach said.

“Hopefully we can use him in district play,” Huisman said.

After Fort Madison’s big start, Centerville began cutting into the lead. They eventually took the lead after putting together a four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth. The Bloodhounds, however, managed to score the game’s final two runs and escaped with a 7-6 victory.

The Big Reds’ Grant Walker and Daniel Cisler both drove in two runs in the contest.

Michael Starcevich, who relieved Marin after two and a third innings, took the loss in game two. He allowed two runs, one of them earned; on three hits while striking out one and walking two in three innings.

Despite the loss, Huisman still was pleased with his team’s effort in the two games.

“We haven’t been playing really strong baseball lately, but tonight was a good overall effort,” he said. “I think the guys played with a lot of enthusiasm and were pretty upbeat.”

Centerville (20-16, 11-9) hosts Pella Thursday. Then they will turn around and play Pella again Friday in Knoxville in the first round of Class 3A Regionals.
