ALBIA — The points, as they say, don't matter.
"We just have guys who want to win," Albia High School boys basketball coach Kevin Archer said. "We need guys to score, but we have a great bunch of guys who only care about winning."
The Blue Demons added another victory to the win column, using a big run that spanned the halves in a 51-36 South Central Conference victory over Davis County at Albia High School. Albia (5-1, 4-1 SCC) scored 21 consecutive points from the end of the first quarter into the second half to run a close game into a rout.
Blake Chance scored a game-high 20 points for the Blue Demons; Davis County's defenses didn't matter, as Chance scored inside and buried three 3-pointers.
"Blake is a special player," Archer said. "I think Davis County went a little more physical against him in the second half, but he can get guys in foul trouble if they play that way. He's just a kid whose played a lot of ball."
He was instrumental in Albia's run that put the Mustangs in a deep hole the rest of the game. After the teams played an entertaining opening quarter in which the Blue Demons led by a point, Albia ratcheted up its defense and made the extra pass to find the easier basket. In a way, Albia couldn't do anything wrong during a 21-0 spurt that included a shutout in the second quarter.
"We kind of had our zone defense in our back pocket, and we thought if they would miss some shots, we'd stick with it," Archer said. "A lot of things went right for us in the first half. I thought we contested their shots better than we did in the second half, even though Davis County is bigger than we are. We just have a lot of guys who hustle."
Davis County trailed by as many as 21 in the second half, but had a stronger start to the half, getting a 3-pointer by Trevor Slayton early and back-to-back 3s by Ivan Garcia and Slayton in the final 45 seconds of the third quarter to pull within 42-27.
Dalton Reeves led the Mustangs (1-5, 0-5) with 11 points off the bench, eight of those in the first half.
Braden Messamaker scored 12 for the Blue Demons.
Albia started the game hot from the perimeter, as 3s by Nathan Crall and Messamaker opened up an 8-2 lead just over five minutes into the game. Davis County responded, with a pair of 3s by Reeves turning the deficit in a 12-10 lead with just under a minute remaining. Messamaker hit another 3-pointer to put the Blue Demons ahead to stay.
"I didn't think we took a lot of bad shots tonight, but we don't have guys who care about their stats," Archer said. "I think we were feeling it a little bit early in the game."
Albia visits Pleasantville Saturday. Davis County hosts Clarke Thursday.
