MARSHALLTOWN — Cale Leonard shot a 1-under par 69, using a stretch of three birdies in four holes to overcome a slow start, as the Ottumwa High School boys golf team fired a season-low 298 to finish second at the Joe August Invitational Friday at Elmwood County Club.
Joe Hammer shot an even-par 70 for the Bulldogs, who finished eight shots behind Marshalltown on the Bobcats' home course. Steven Langland shot a 76 and Trent Grooms and 83 to round out the Bulldogs' team score. Noah Bjerke (84) and Tyler Brown (91) finished out the team.
Marshalltown's Cole Davis shot 65 to claim medalist honors, while teammate Grant Greazel tied Leonard, four shots back. Davis made seven birdies on the day.
Leonard bogeyed two of his first three holes, but birdies at the seventh, ninth and 10th put him under par; he had a pair of bogeys and pair of birdies over the final eight holes.
Hammer parred every hole on the back nine, as he had a bogey and birdie on the front side among a 16-par round.
Ottumwa plays in the Grayhound Invitational at Flint Hills Municipal Golf Course in Burlington Monday.
