RUNNELS – Southeast Polk took advantage of a late foul called on Ottumwa in the second half, scoring on a penalty kick in the final 15 minutes to secure a 1-0 win over the Bulldog boys soccer team on Friday.
Ethan Vasconez collected 12 of Ottumwa's 13 saves in the net, giving Ottumwa a chance to pull off a big Central Iowa Metropolitan League road win. The Bulldogs collected eight shots during the match, including five on goal with Oscar Rodriguez nearly putting OHS on top in the 20th minute, delivering a free kick that was stopped by Southeast Polk junior goal keeper Blaze Payton.
"That could have changed the trajectory of the entire match," Ottumwa head boys soccer coach Andy Maw said. "Goals win games. The kids are playing well. We're just struggling getting strikes with our chances."
Ottumwa (2-3) has a big week upcoming with road trips to Ankeny Centennial and Pella. The Bulldogs return home on Friday to host Urbandale at Schafer Stadium.
