The Ottumwa volleyball dropped its season opener at Johnston on Tuesday by scores of 16-25, 25-19, 25-12 and 25-20.

“I thought we came out very strong and looked very good in the first game. It seemed like we got a little relaxed for the next two games. We just couldn’t quite get over the hump after that,” said third-year OHS head coach Jessica Carson.

Megan Black (17-17), Ashley Salgado (16-16) and Katie Sammons (14-14) were all perfect at the serving stripe for Ottumwa. Peyton Crosser led Ottumwa with three aces.

Crosser managed eight kills, Sammons six kills and Rachel Hinebaugh sent three kills to the floor.

Beth Overturf accumulated 11 assists and Salgado led Ottumwa with 24 digs.

“We faced a very good team and it’s always tough to play on the road. We’ll work on what we need to improve on for the next time out,” said Carson.

Ottumwa plays in the Marshalltown Invite this Saturday and returns to Marshalltown on Tuesday, Sept. 6 for a match with the Bobcats.
