IOWA CITY — There was no drama at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Iowa City on Monday.

The Ottumwa girls golf team just went out and did what they were supposed to do.

No opponent has even come close to matching the Bulldogs on the links this season, and Monday was no exception, as Ottumwa bested second-place Muscatine by 32 strokes on the way to the Class 4A, Region 2 championship. The resounding regional victory sends the Bulldog team to the Class 4A state golf meet, which will take place at Jester Park in Granger and Otter Creek in Ankeny next Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29-30.

It was business as usual for the Bulldogs on Monday.

“I thought the girls might be pretty excited, and they were happy,” said Ottumwa coach Dusty Stewart. “But they just went out and played golf like they do every day. These girls expected to go to state. We proved today that we are one of the top teams, and we showed that we need to be at state tournament.”

Ottumwa, which has bested its opponents by an average of nearly 36 strokes through the regular season, carded a team round of 319 to Muscatine’s 351. Davenport Central also had a team round of 351, but Muscatine received the nod to go to state, as its fifth golfer had a better score, and the Muskies will join the Bulldogs at the state tilt.

Ottumwa’s main competition at the state meet next week will likely come from West Des Moines Valley, which won Class 4A, Region 4 with a team round of 318 at Westwood Golf Course in Newton Monday.

“We’ve accomplished a goal of getting to state,” said Stewart. “Our next goal is to win the state tournament. We’ve done all we can all season, now we need to do it again at state.”

The Bulldogs were led by Kristin Paulson, who shot a 75 to earn meet medalist honors. She was one stroke better than Iowa City West’s Laura Cilek. The top five golfers at each regional advance to state as individuals, and Ottumwa’s Sarah Paulson carded 80 to place fifth. Out of 13 competitions this season for Ottumwa, Kristin has been crowned medalist 10 times and Sarah three. Both should be contenders for the individual state title as well as a part of a team title.

“I think everybody on the team wants to win a state title,” said Stewart. “We have two girls that can each make a run at the individual state title, but we’re focused as a team on the team title. The two Paulson girls are very unselfish. They’d rather win as a team than as individuals.”

Each of Ottumwa’s top four golfers shot 82 or better for the Bulldogs Monday.

“Actually Allison (Zeller), Sarah and Kristin each had a big number on their cards today, but all three fought through it,” said Stewart.

Zeller and Paige Wetrich each shot 82 for Ottumwa, while Hailey Sheldahl carded 93 and Audrey Stanek 98.

“Paige had her best round of the year. We’re peaking at the right time, which is wonderful,” said Stewart.
