WEST BURLINGTON — Indian Hills continued to soar at the start of the season, though it took some late-inning heroics to aviod a stumble at Southeastern.
After easily toppling the Blackhawks, 11-3, in the opening game, Southeastern had ideas of taking a solid split by taking a 5-1 lead into the sixth inning of game two. Still down 5-2 in the seventh, by scoring four runs including the tying and go-ahead runs with two outs in the frame.
After being forced into extra innings, IHCC went ahead for good on a Francisco Tirado Rodriquez RBI double in the eighth. Nathan Cammack closed out the 7-6 win with two strikeouts, completing a come-from-behind sweep for the Falcons.
“We had a sloppy stretch offensively,” Indian Hills head coach Cam Walker said. “Nathan came in and did a nice job in relief on the mound and we got hot at the plate at the perfect time.”
Sophomore lead-off hitter Raymond Kruml nailed three hits in the opening game, including a two-run homer in the four inning. Catcher Eric Ogden added a homer to lead-off a four-run second inning that put IHCC on the road to an easy win.
Roberto Nieves went six innings in a solid start for the freshman. Nieves collected his second win of the season by scattering five hits and a pair of runs after IHCC built as much as a seven-run lead.
Tirado Rodriquez had three hits, including the game-winning double in the nightcap. Francisco Vega and Sean Smith also nailed doubles in game two for the Falcons while Kruml scored three more runs to cap a big overall day for the Lisle, Ill. native.
Indian Hills (14-1) hits another southeast Iowa diamond today when the Falcons travel to Oskaloosa to face the William Penn JV. The doubleheader is slated to get underway at 4 p.m.
