ALBIA – Chariton pulled off a postseason stunner on Monday night, avenging a four-set loss to Albia during the regular season by sweeping the Lady Dees 25-16, 25-23, 25-19 win to open Class 3A, Region 5 tournament at Albia's 'A' Gymnasium.

KNOXVILLE — The last day of the volleyball regular season was Saturday as eight teams made their way to Knoxville for the Knoxville Tournament. Pella Christian would leave as the champions after going 4-1 on the day while Knoxville fell in the semifinals to finish 3-1.

DONNELLSON – One year after walking off the field beat up and battered with a cast on his arm, Sawyer Wardlow will walk back on to the gridiron at West Marshall High School this Friday night for a postseason rematch with the fourth-ranked Trojans.

DES MOINES – Tanner Schark was faced with the prospect of leading the Ottumwa football team from two scores behind before he even took his first snap from center on Friday.

ALBIA – The Albia football team played host to fourth-ranked (2A) West Marshall on Friday in the scheduled regular-season finale for the Blue Demons.

BURLINGTON – Brady McWhirter, Gavin Van Veen and Kaidyn Mickels crossed the finish line within 14 seconds of each other, earning all-Southeast Conference honors as the Fairfield boys cross-country team finished second as a team with 51 points.

VICTOR – Sigourney senior libero Madelynn Hornback recorded her 1,000th career dig on Thursday night, helping the Savages score a win over Lynnville-Sully in the silver bracket portion of the South Iowa Cedar League tournament.

OTTUMWA – Two weeks earlier, a 56-0 loss on the road might have been viewed as one more disheartening loss during yet another potentially winless season for the Ottumwa High School football team.

MONTEZUMA – Sigourney freshman Reanah Utterback continued an impressive and busy fall on Tuesday, earning all-conference honors in her first South Iowa Cedar League run for the Sigourney High School girls cross-country team.

SIGOURNEY – Erica Groom knows the North Mahaska Warhawks are going to have to kick it into another gear to win the South Iowa Cedar League tournament title.

EDDYVILLE – Molly Shafer helped the 11th-ranked (3A) Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont volleyball team turn a match with outright South Central Conference title hopes into more of a championship coronation on Monday.

OSKALOOSA — Not that they needed any more confidence at this point of the season with a six-ranked squad on the cusp of a conference title and a top seed in their regional, but Oskaloosa took care of business on Saturday at their home tournament by dominating their way to a perfect 5-0 record and a title without dropping a single set.

CEDAR FALLS – Trailing by a single shot with three holes left in the Class 4A boys state golf tournament, Cale Leonard approached his ball after teeing off on the par-5 seventh hole at Beaver Hills Country Club.

EDDYVILLE – With any hopes of earning a postseason berth, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont turned to a pair of sophomores to pick up an important win on what might be the final game of the season at Ike Ryan Field.

LEON – The fourth-ranked Sigourney-Keota Cobras unleashed their venom on another opponent Friday night, laying claim to the Class 1A, District 6 high school football championship.

WAPELLO — Lauren Derscheid secured her first Southeast Iowa Superconference individual cross-country championship, edging sophomore teammate Lauren Steigleder by 11.3 seconds as the Panther teammates led third-ranked (1A) Pekin to the SEISC cross-country team title.

DES MOINES – Less than two weeks before running in the Class 4A state qualifying meet, Ottumwa hopefuls secured top-five finishes at Ewing Park during the 66th East Augustine Invitational on Thursday.

CHARITON – Molly Shafer recorded 19 kills on 25-28 hitting while matching twin sister Kate with a team-leading three aces, helping 11th-ranked (3A) EBF clinch at least a share of the South Central Conference title.

BURLINGTON – In previous years, something like an errant opening tee shot might have set the tone for a disappointing day on the course for Ottumwa senior Cale Leonard.

Ottumwa senior Cale Leonard qualified for the Class 4A boys state golf tournament on Tuesday, winning the individual district title with round of 69 at the Burlington Golf Club.

MORAVIA — In a tight battle for the boys team title for the Centerville Big Red Invitational cross-country title, 15th-ranked (2A) Davis County was able to edge Oskaloosa by two points (88-90) for the team title at The Preserve Golf Course.

OTTUMWA — Officially, the number that will reside next to Abaya Selema's name will be 380 yards.

SIGOURNEY – The night started with the Sigourney volleyball team riding an emotional high, celebrating the career of six senior players.
