DES MOINES — The winning score didn't surprise Ottumwa High School girls golf coach Ryan Morgan.
The winner, however, was a surprise.
Shayleigh Dunham shot a 98 to finish to claim medalist honors and finish as the lone player under 100 during Wednesday's CIML Metro meet at Bright Grandview Golf Course. Ottumwa completed the conference sweep by taking the team title with a 428, 18 strokes better than Des Moines Roosevelt.
"We know we're very fortunate to win, because we didn't play our best today," Morgan said. "You can see that by the score. One girl broke 100 on a beautiful day to play."
The Bulldogs had a battle on their hands at the turn, leading Roosevelt by just five shots. But Ottumwa relied on consistency and some improvement over the final stretch of holes to extend its lead over the Roughriders.
Jaden Bradford, who was the runner-up medalist last season, shot a 102 to finish fourth. Kjierstin Ridgway (108) was seventh, while Lilly Frazier (120) counted as the team's final score. Leticia Francisco (124) and Ava Green (138) rounded out the team.
"Shayleigh winning was a great surprise for us," Morgan said. "Her score is about two or three shots off where she has been all season. We always try to get three girls under 100. Winning conference was one of our goals this year, and something we've talked about accomplishing."
The fourth counting score has rotated throughout the season, and it was Frazier's turn to count toward the team total this time.
The Bulldogs compete in the Class 4A regional meet Monday at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Golf Course in Marshalltown, a layout they're familiar with. The top two teams and top six individuals (including ties) will advance to the state meet at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.
"It's kind of like Cedar Creek for us. There isn't a lot of trouble, and if you hit good shots, you'll be rewarded," Morgan said. "We'll go practice on Friday and really play the course mentally before the meet. We can't waste any shots on Monday."
