Sixth-ranked Lady Dees edge No. 12 Centerville

Albia's Danica Workman rounds second base during South Central Conference prep softball action against Centerville on Wednesday night at the Monroe County Sports Complex.

ALBIA — The month of July is where high school softball teams in Iowa want to be playing their best.

On the fifth day in June, Albia co-head softball coach Darren Hill will take a win any way the sixth-ranked Lady Dees can get one. Clutch late-game base running by Kennedy Schroeder and a couple key catches in left by Ellie Spurin helped the Lady Dees edge No. 12 (3A) Centerville, 2-1, in an early-season clash of South Central Conference contenders.

"An ugly win is better than looking good and losing any day of the week," Hill said. "We played some really good defense and made some really big plays early in the game. We didn't hit the ball as well as I would like to, but Kennedy did a great job when Centerville made a throwing mistake on her single. It went all the way to the back stop, Kennedy saw it and took off for third base. Jena (Lawrence) hit a ground ball to second to bring her home. That run ended up being the difference. It was a big run that we needed to have."

Albia (8-3, 3-1 SCC) will be right back on the diamond this afternoon for a make-up conference matinee at Davis County. Varsity action begins at 2 p.m. Albia then hosts Clarke in another key battle for the SCC title on Friday before heading to the Lynnville-Sully tournament for two games on Saturday.
