Last year, neither Pekin track and field teams was able to secure a team championship at the state qualifying meet. One week later, the Panther boys secured the second state championship in program history.
This year, both the Pekin boys and girls will head to state after winning team championships in the Class 1A state qualifier held at Sigourney. The Panther boys, seeking a second straight state title, scored 113 points on Friday beating Lynnville-Sully by 27 while the Panther girls knocked off Montezuma with 126.5 points.
The Pekin boys secured a pair of berths in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs with a 1-2 finish by Panther teammates Brady Millikin and Colten Glosser. Millikin earned the win in the one-mile race in 4:44.85 and the two-mile in 10:11.61.
Quinn Ledger, Lathe Crochet, Kennan Winn and Dayne Eckley qualified to run for the Panther boys in the 4x200 relay after finishing second to Winfield-Mount Union on Friday in a time of 1:33.91.
The Panther girls qualified in the 4x100 relay with a win from Cate Roth, Ellie Ledger, Emilee Linder and Sophie Wittrock in 52.7 seconds. Sarah Eubanks, Hollie Loper, Zoey Wright and Remi Duwa qualified for state in the 4x400 relay after winning the race on Friday in 4:19.99.
Cari and Remi Duwa joined Loper and Emily Laumeyer for a winning run for the Pekin girls in the 4x800 relay in 10:13.82, advancing on to run at state. The Panther boys also qualified to run in their portion of the 1A state race next week as Glosser and Millkin joined Tanner Conger and Zack Wise, winning the two-mile relay in 8:34.67.
Roth, Wittrock, Wright and Eubanks qualified for the Pekin girls by finishing second on Friday in the girls sprint medley relay in 1:55.95. The Panther boys qualified in the distance medley relay with Cameron and Brady Millikin joining Crochet and Eckley to place second to Keota in the state qualifier in 3:45.73.
Freshman Kerrigan Pope secured a berth in her first year competing for the Pekin girls, winning the girls discus throw at the state qualifier with a toss that reached 129 feet. The Panther boys scored a win in the shuttle hurdle relay as Ledger and Crochet joined Cole Earnest and Devin Fraise in producing a time of 1:03.84.
The Cardinal boys finished third with 71 points. Landon Becker, running in his first state qualifying meet, secured his first trip to state by winning the 800 meter run in 2:06.94.
Comet senior Trey Albert qualified for state automatically with a runner-up showing in the 200 meter dash while freshman Griffin Greiner earned a state berth in the boys 400 meter dash after finishing second to Lynnville-Sully senior Tyson Vander Linden.
Greiner and Albert joined Colby Aschenbrenner and Jarrett Greiner in a winning run for the Cardinal boys in the 4x100 relay in 44.71 seconds. Albert, who will compete in four different events after winning the boys long jump (20-9.5), joined Becker and the Greiners to qualify for state with a runner-up finish Friday in the boys 4x400 in 3:34.63.
The Sigourney girls also finished third in state qualifying points with 85. Summer Barthelman qualified with a win in the 400 meter hurdles in 1:07.49, a win in the long jump with a leap of 16-8.5 and a runner-up finish in the 400 meter dash in 58.49 seconds. Sloane Magill joined Barthelman, Rylee Goldman and Heidi Clarahan in a winning run of shuttle hurdle relay (1:09.6) while also qualifing for the Savages with a runner-up finish in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.04 seconds.
Kaylee Weber qualified for Sigourney in the girls shot put, finishing second to Winfield-Mount Union junior Anna Hudson with a throw of 35-3.5.
The Cardinal girls placed 10th with 34.5 points. Alexia McClure booked a trip to state as the sophomore placed second in the girls 800 meter run before joining Kiya Chapin, Rachel Lewman and Sydney Pickrell in the girls distance medley in 4:28.3.
The Sigourney boys placed fifth with 62.5 points in the state qualifying meet. Spencer Magill qualified for the Savages with a win in the boys high jump (6-2) while Payton Schauf advanced with a win in the discus, making a throw that reached 152 feet and four inches. Schauf also advanced in the shot put, finishing second to Lynnville-Sully senior Rylan James with a toss of 45-11.5.
