OTTUMWA – Longtime Ottumwa swimming coach Mike McWilliams will be honored Tuesday night during the Bulldog girls swimming team’s home CIML Metro conference dual with Des Moines Roosevelt, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. During the mid-meet break, a ceremony will be held to officially name the competition pool at the Beach after McWilliams.

There will also be a reception at the Beach following the conclusion of tonight’s swimming meet. McWilliams first guided the Ottumwa swim program in 1964 and continued guiding the program until officially stepping down as head coach in 2006.

“It was just time. As much as I loved it, I didn’t want to stick around when I wasn’t useful. There were circumstances that made it difficult. I’m not as Teflon as I used to be,” said McWilliams.

Ottumwa crowned two state champions while under McWilliams tenure and was a top-five team during a big run in the mid-90’s. McWilliams started out coaching swimming as a 19-year-old at the Ottumwa Country Club.

“I was very fortunate to have good kids and parents,” McWilliams said.
