Reivers hand Warriors first loss

Destin Jones, seen here with control against T.J. Arnold of Iowa Lakes earlier this season during a junior college men's wrestling dual at the Multipurpose Center in Centerville, secured a 149-pound win for Indian Hills during an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference dual at Iowa Western.

COUNCIL BLUFFS – The inaugural season of Indian Hills wrestling has been filled with so much success.

Iowa Western, however, became the first stumbling block for the Warriors in the program's first year. The fifth-ranked Reivers earned a 25-14 win in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference dual at the Kanesville Arena over the 12th-ranked Warriors in a battle between the ICCAC's only two remaining unbeaten squads.

“As a coaching staff and team, this was a humbling experience,” admitted Indian Hills head wrestling coach Cole Spree. “We look forward to getting better.”

The night started promising for the Warriors as they took three of the first four matches with Chris Busutil taking a 7-4 decision to open the meet at 125 and Caleb Meekins and Destin Jones adding major decisions at 133 and 149, respectively to make it 11-3, Warriors.

Indian Hills would only notch one more win the remainder of the night. The Reivers took five of the last six bouts to keep their place atop the ICCAC dual standings. Deron Pulliam’s 6-2 decision at 184 pounds was the only decision that kept Iowa Western from running the table to end the evening.

“Unfortunately, this wasn’t the outcome we wanted,” Spree added. “It is going to be a great learning lesson for our young team.

“We didn’t have all of our starting lineup, but that’s not an excuse. Our guys know that they could have performed better.”

The Warriors (4-1 overall, 3-1 ICCAC) have little time to regroup as another top-ten unit in No. 7-rated NIACC looms on Wednesday. The Trojans will visit Centerville for another ICCAC showdown at 6 p.m. at the Multipurpose Building.
