ELDON — There were a combined 20 hits and 11 errors, but the Cardinal High School baseball team outlasted Melcher-Dallas 17-14 in a wild nonconference game Monday at Cardinal High School.
Cardinal built a 6-0 lead through three innings, only to see Melcher-Dallas erase it entirely with a seven-run fourth. The Comets scored 16 of their runs from the third through sixth innings.
Cameron Honomichl had two hits and drove in three runs for Cardinal, while Jarrett Rea and Griffin Greiner had two RBIs each. Jentry Arbogast scored four times, and five different players had at least two hits and scored two runs apiece.
Cardinal overcame six errors by pounding out 14 hits.
Dawson Lewis, the third pitcher the Comets used, picked up the win with three innings of relief. He struck out four and walked four as Cardinal struck out 10 and walked 12 in the contest.
Cardinal visits Central Lee for a SEI Superconference South Division game Tuesday.
Davis County 4, EBF 3 (8 innings)
BLOOMFIELD — Draven DeKraai and Garl Norman both scored on errors in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally the Mustangs to a South Central Conference victory.
Caden Hill's ground ball to second base couldn't be fielded cleanly, allowing DeKraai to tie the game. Then, another error at second base allowed the winning run to score.
EBF committed six errors, yet still had a chance to win after scoring on an error in the top half of the inning. The Rockets led 2-0 until the Mustangs scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the game.
Fairfield 9-9, Fort Madison 0-3
FORT MADISON — Kosta Papazogolou struck out 14 and allowed just one hit in 6 2/3 innings in the first game as the Trojans swept a Southeast Conference road doubleheader.
Caden Jones drove in three runs for Fairfield, which took a 4-0 lead through three innings. Fort Madison's lone hit of the opener was a third-inning single by Nick Fehseke.
In the second game, the Trojans put up four runs in the third inning to break the game open. Cole Engle drove in three runs, while Jones was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
Brittain Bowman pitched 5 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win. He struck out six and walked six, but allowed just one run.
No. 13 EBF 11, Davis County 5
BLOOMFIELD — Faith Roberts homered and drove in three runs to lead the Class 3A 13th-ranked Rockets to a South Central Conference road win.
Reina Taylor, Emma Lenox and Rylee German all had three hits for EBF, which used a five-run sixth inning to take a 9-0 lead.
Taylor allowed one earned run and struck out six to pick up the win.
Sophia Young had two hits and drove in two runs for the Mustangs.
Cardinal 11, Columbus 0 (5 innings)
ELDON — Kassidy Verrips drove in three runs to back up a dominating pitching performance as the Comets rolled past the Wildcats in a Superconference crossover game.
Verrips tossed a three-hitter and struck out seven for Cardinal, while Allisyn Cloke also drove in two runs. The Comets banged out 13 hits, with four different players recording at least two apiece.
