PEKIN – The Pekin Panthers made a furious rally in the hope of pulling off an upset against eighth-ranked (1A) Mediapolis.
Dayne Eckley scored a pair of touchdowns and rushed for 131 yards while Kennan Winn hauled in a late touchdown pass, but a failed onside kick ended Pekin’s comeback bid. The Bulldogs held on for a 27-21 win at Tom Stone Field, dropping Pekin to 0-3 on the season.
“I think this was a turning point. We lost Logan Keeley for the year and had to move some kids around, but we played Pekin football,” Pekin head football coach Bud Blakely said. “We took some lumps, but we gave Mediapolis all they could handle. We had more offense. We had some penalties go against us. Outside of that, I feel like we outplayed them.”
Pekin heads to Davis County next Friday night.
