Guest heads back to Drake Relays

Ottumwa senior Anne Guest looks to clear the bar at 5-1 during the Don Newell Classic at Schafer Stadium on Tuesday. Guest qualified officially for the Drake Relays on Thursday, crossing the bar at the Randy Wilson Invitational in Knoxville at 5-3.

KNOXVILLE – Returning to the Drake Relays was anything by a guarantee for Anne Guest.

That was until Thursday night, when the Ottumwa High School senior was able to get back over the high jump bar at a season-high five feet and three inches at the Randy Wilson Relays. Guest finished second overall at the Knoxville meet, bested only by Winterset's Thea Banning who cleared the bar at 5-4.

Both Banning and Guest will be part of the girls high jump field on Thursday at the 2021 Drake Relays. Guest returns to compete at Drake for the third straight season, tying for 19th as a sophomore clearing five feet before going on to place third  after competing as a sophomore, finishing in a tie for 19th place in the girls high jump. Guest, now a two-time Drake qualifier, made a successful first jump at five feet before tying for third at the state meet clearing the bar at 5-2.

Ottumwa scored 99 points in the Randy Wilson Relays, finishing fourth overall. Lina Newland, who just missed qualifying for the Drake Relays in the long jump, finished second at Knoxville with a leap of 15-9.25 almost three inches ahead of Mady Houk, who will compete at Drake in the event on Thursday.

Isabelle Mellin, Mia Garza, Yaleli Carapia and Meghan Coulter secured a runner-up finish in the 4x800 relay for the Bulldogs, finishing in a time of 11:11.78. The Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont boys finished eighth with 33 points, led by Thane Alexander's winning-run of 23.99 seconds in the 200-meter dash and a winning run in the distance medley relay in 4:21.31.
