DES MOINES — The Ottumwa High School volleyball team had one of its best CIML Metro tournament runs in years as the Bulldogs finished second in the tournament Saturday at Des Moines East High School.

The Bulldogs completed pool play in the morning with wins over Des Moines North (21-6, 21-8) and Des Moines Hoover (21-10, 21-16), but lost to Des Moines Roosevelt (21-12, 21-15).

Ottumwa then needed three games to get past Des Moines Lincoln in the semifinals (25-13, 22-25, 15-4) before Roosevelt once again beat the Bulldogs for the championship 25-11, 25-17. The Roughriders, who swept Ottumwa to clinch the Metro regular-season championship earlier in the week, won its fifth consecutive league title.

"We played strong all day. Tough match with Roosevelt in the championship but proud of my players for their day-long play," Ottumwa coach Ruth Thomas said. "This was the first time making the finals since I've been head coach. Just a great accomplishment for this team."

Anne Guest finished the tournament with 19 kills, six blocks and five service aces, while Kacy Nickerson added 13 kills. Emma Weilbrenner had 26 assists and Mercedes Coram 25 digs.

The Bulldogs (23-17) open Class 5A regional play at Indianola (26-17). The match begins at 7 p.m.
