FAIRFIELD — Simon Ball's wrestling style is unique, and it's all his own.

At Saturday's Class 2A sectional meet, it was also highly successful.

Ball responded from a pin in the 138-pound championship match with one of his own in the second-place wrestleback, becoming one of six Davis County High School wrestlers to move on to the district meet at Washington. He's one of five runners-up for the Mustangs, but that's fine with him.

"I've just had a lot of fun this year. It feels really good to get to districts," said Ball, a first-time district qualifier. "If it goes beyond that, that's great, because I've already accomplished more than I thought I would."

Ball is tall and lanky, which can make it tricky for opponents. In his two wins on the day, he spent just 1:55 on the mat in posting pins. Washington's Garrett Ikerd pinned Ball at 1:18 of the championship match.

"Two years ago when Simon started, we had to change his style," Davis County coach Jim Nelson said. "He's so limber and loose, and he's good at using that to his advantage. He's won a lot of big matches that way. Others have tried to model him, but it doesn't work."

Wilston Wuthrich was the lone Mustang to advance to the district meet as a sectional champion. The 152-pounder earned pins in both of his matches, finishing off his day by pinning Washington's Ayden Frazier at 3:30 after points were hard to come by early on.

Already, Wuthrich has improved on where he was last year. He went into district's as a sectional runner-up, but this year will draw a runner-up in his opening match.

"I'm just going to go in there and try as hard as I can," he said. "I'll go in, see what I like against the guy and hope to do well."

Dawson Townsend (106), Taylor Huggins (113), Caden Hill (170) and Kolton Stremler (220) also advanced for the Mustangs as runners-up.

Townsend was pinned by in the championship match by second-ranked Blaine Frazier of Notre Dame-West Burlington, while Huggins was pinned by No. 1 Matthew Lewis of Centerville in their championship match.

Davis County also had tough defeats. Last year's state qualifier, Davan Goering, was unable to make it out of the bracket at 132, while Micah Elam was pinned in the third period after building a 14-1 lead over ND-WB's Cole Jarrett and needing just a takedown to wrestle for a district spot at 160.

For a while, the Mustangs had hopes of possibly qualifying for regional duals as one of the top two finishers in the team race. But a 1-5 championship round put any damper on those hopes, and they finished fourth with 166 points.

"Getting fourth is fine. We felt we could get anywhere from two to six guys to districts, so we're pretty happy with getting the six we got," Nelson said. "Stremler gave up weight at 220 and still made it."

Fairfield's Peyton Cline advanced as a runner-up at 145 after falling to Washington's Dillan Sanders in the championship match, while teammate Caleb Heisel (152) fell in his wrestleback match. All six teams in the sectional had at least one wrestler advance.

Nelson hopes his team can turn the momentum into some strong finishes at the districts. The early matchups will be tough, but he feels like the Mustangs are wrestling their best now.

"We have everything to gain and nothing to lose," he said. "The pressure will be on the sectional champs we see. The first thing we wanted with these guys to wrestle correctly, and then the getting in shape will come.

"We're prepared and we're in shape."
