OTTUMWA — David Schwent feels the Ottumwa boys soccer squad’s five-game losing streak is two-fold.

It needs to be corrected before the regular season ceases or it’s going to be a one-and-done postseason scenario for the Bulldogs.

Des Moines Roosevelt handed Ottumwa a 9-2 loss at Walsh Soccer Complex on Thursday night in CIML Metro play.

Ottumwa is now 3-7 on the season and 0-3 in league play. The Bulldogs lost 3-2 in overtime to Southeast Polk on Monday.

Schwent described Ottumwa’s recent struggles and what he deems as the root cause.

“The difference is the mindset going into the game and when we get down we give up or we’re quitting before the end of the game,” said Schwent.

Dennis Opitz and Will Mackaman each recorded a hat trick for the Roughriders, scoring three goals apiece.

Ottumwa’s goals were scored courtesy of Alex Wertheim and Joe Roark.

The Bulldogs host Indianola on Monday.
