The Ottumwa girls tennis team opened the dual season with a tough tilt Thursday, as always-powerful West Des Moines Valley made the trip to Staggs Courts to take on the Bulldogs.
Valley finished fourth in the state a season ago, with three of their top five players back, including top seed Jenni Aldrich. There was no letdown for the Tigers, as Valley swept Ottumwa 11-0 and Aldrich took a victory over top Bulldog seed Ashley Salgado.
“We need to start somewhere, and we now know what we need to focus on and improve,” said Ottumwa girls tennis coach Emily Phommachack. “I was impressed with how well we hung with Valley. For the first meet of the season, I was content with our finishing scores.”
Aldrich downed Salgado 6-3, 6-2 to get the Tigers rolling, and Valley never looked back.
“Ashley fought hard,” said Phommachack. “She did a nice job of moving her opponent around and she worked on placement.”
Valley’s Lucy Korsakov downed Ottumwa’s Katie Hicks 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 slot, while Lisa Pusin took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mary Paluska at No. 3.
Ottumwa’s Kelsey Granneman forced a third set with Valley’s Susan Su at the No. 4 seed, as Granneman took a 7-5 victory before falling 6-3 (10-4).
“Kelsey battled,” said Phommachack. “She and her opponent were very consistent hitters. It was fun to watch.”
Valley’s Delaney Parman downed Ottumwa’s Jennifer Klodt 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 while Valley’s Ashley Loper took a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Ottumwa’s Jill Arduser to clinch the team win for the Tigers.
“That was their first varsity singles matches,” Phommachack of Klodt and Arduser. “They both stayed confident and held their ground.”
Valley also swept doubles play, with Granneman and Katie Zingg teaming up in the No. 2 slot for Ottumwa. The duo won the first set 6-4 before falling 6-2 (10-8).
“We have a lot of work to do, but I’m happy to see all the girls play and work hard,” Phommachack said.
