MOUNT VERNON — The Ottumwa High School volleyball team won two of its six matches at the Mount Vernon Invitational Saturday, as the Bulldogs earned a victory in pool play and bracket play and faced a pair of top-ranked teams throughout the day.
The Bulldogs defeated Iowa City Regina 21-14, 21-14 in pool play, but fell to No. 1 (Class 3A) Mount Vernon 21-10, 21-11, and No. 1 (4A) Dubuque Wahlert, 21-18, 21-10. Ottumwa also fell to North Cedar in pool play, 21-11, 21-16.
Ottumwa found more of its game in bracket play, holding off Regina 25-16, 21-25, 17-15 before falling to Center Point-Urbana 25-22, 25-19.
Anne Guest paced the Ottumwa hitters with 19 kills and was 37 of 38 with three aces. Ally Paris and Chloe Schneckloth each had eight kills, while Emma Weilbrenner had 28 assists and was 35 of 40 serving with six aces. Kiley Heller led the back row group with 25 digs.
Ottumwa (6-6) visits Des Moines Hoover Sept. 17 for its CIML Metro opener.
Comets claim English Valleys title
NORTH ENGLISH — The Comets had their way for three pool play matches, then withstood a strong charge from WACO to win the championship of the English Valleys tournament.
In pool play, Cardinal defeated Tri-County 21-3, 21-11, defeated East Marshall 21-9, 21-15, beat English Valleys 21-8, 21-10, and then outlasted SEI Superconference South Division foe WACO 27-25, 25-23.
The Comets (4-1) received great serving all day, missing just 10 serves out of 169 in the tournament. Rachel Lewman was 21 for 21, while Trista Benedict was 31 of 34 with nine aces. Maddie Cloke served seven aces, while Maddy Langford had four aces.
Cloke led Cardinal with 23 kills, while Kiya Chapin had 17 and Benedict 15. Riley Bears had six blocks. Langford had 47 assists.
Davis County finished third in the tournament, going 2-1 in pool play and then defeated East Marshall in bracket play. The Mustangs defeated Columbus 21-12, 22-20, lost to WACO 21-17, 21-16 and beat Sigourney 21-15, 21-10. In bracket play, Davis County defeated East Marshall 25-12, 25-11.
Jessica Early and Hannah Porter each had 16 kills to lead the team, while Early also was 34 of 36 serving with eight aces. Bryce Dixon had five blocks and Hannah Schooley 24 digs. Brett Lough had 51 assists in the tournament.
Cardinal hosts No. 4 (Class 2A) Van Buren Tuesday, while Davis County (4-6) hosts Chariton Tuesday.
Panthers fourth at Nike Invitational
BURLINGTON — Pekin split its fourth matches at the Nike Invitational at Father Minett Gymnasium.
The Panthers won two of their three pool play matches, starting with a 13-21, 21-12, 15-7 win over Louisa Muscatine. That was followed by a 21-17, 21-17 win over Keokuk, and Notre Dame defeated Pekin 21-9, 16-21, 15-5 in the match to determine which team went to the championship.
New London then defeated Pekin in the consolation match, 25-21, 25-8, while sixth-ranked (Class 3A) Davenport Assumption beat Notre Dame for the title.
Pekin’s individual statistics were not available. The Panthers visit Columbus in a SEI Superconference North Division tilt Tuesday.
